Drayton's Wiser 2nd Generation range is the biggest step the brand has taken since it launched a smart heating platform back in 2018. It's no longer just heating controls with an app — it's an all-in-one heating and smart home system, built on a new Zigbee hub that acts as a Matter bridge, brings OpenTherm v4.2 boiler modulation into the box, adds a family of smart sensors and micro modules, and introduces a redesigned smart TRV that's quieter, better looking, and lasts more than two years on a set of AA batteries.
If you already own a Wiser 1st Generation HubR you'll still recognise the layout — same wall plate footprint, same app — but almost everything under the hood has changed, and the new hub unlocks a whole class of devices the old one can't see: water leak detectors, smoke alarms, motion sensors, window/door contacts, LED dimmers, shades micro modules and power monitoring modules that can switch loads up to 3200 W. Every Wiser 2nd Generation product in this article is available now from Quality Heating's Drayton Controls range with express UK delivery.
What actually changed in the 2nd Generation platform
Under the same familiar Wiser Home app, four things shifted at once. The hub gained a proper digital boiler interface (OpenTherm v4.2, not just a switched live), it became a Matter bridge instead of a walled garden, it picked up support for a much wider family of Zigbee smart-home devices, and the TRV that goes on the radiator got a full redesign. Together they turn Wiser from a heating add-on into a platform you can build a house around.
Matter bridge, out of the box
The 2nd Gen HubR acts as a Matter bridge, so Wiser devices show up natively in Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa without proprietary hoops. Existing Matter accessories on your Wi-Fi become controllable inside the Wiser Home app in the same view.
OpenTherm v4.2 boiler modulation
A digital two-wire link to any OpenTherm-ready boiler lets the hub modulate flow temperature instead of just switching the burner on and off. Boilers run at lower, more efficient outputs for longer — the pattern that lets a modern combi hit its A-rated numbers in real conditions.
Heat-pump ready
The same hub interfaces with air source heat pumps via volt-free On/Off switching, and the Wiser Underfloor Heating Controller supports reversible units running cooling through the manifold. A future-ready platform that supports the transition to domestic heating electrification.
Full smart-home Zigbee mesh
Motion, water leak, smoke, temperature/humidity and window/door sensors — plus smart plugs, LED dimmer, shade control and power micro modules — all pair to the same hub as your heating. One app, one mesh, one login.
Redesigned smart TRV
New Wiser Radiator Thermostat with ultra-quiet operation, more than 2 years battery life on the included alkalines (Ni-MH rechargeables also supported), a cleaner cylindrical body, and — for the first time — an anthracite finish alongside the classic white.
Buildable, not locked-in
Start with a single-room kit for a combi boiler, add TRVs a radiator at a time, drop in a UFH controller when you fit wet underfloor heating, then extend into security and appliance control with the sensor range. Nothing needs replacing to grow.
Anthracite thermostat and TRV — for anyone who lost the argument about matching the radiators
The 2nd Generation Wiser Room Thermostat and Radiator Thermostat are now available in a proper matte anthracite as well as white. Same electronics, same app, same certifications — the difference is the finish, which finally lets a smart heating system disappear into a room specified around dark column radiators, black taps and moody kitchen palettes rather than clash with them.
Room Thermostat — Anthracite
Radiator Thermostat — Anthracite
Available at Quality Heating as the Wiser Room Thermostat — Anthracite (WN704R0S0901) and the Wiser Radiator Thermostat 2nd Gen — Anthracite TRV (WV704R0A6901).
The 2nd Generation HubR — three variants, one platform
The centrepiece of any Wiser system is the HubR: the wall-plated box that replaces your existing programmer and talks to the boiler on one side and to every Zigbee device on the other. Wiser 2nd Generation ships in three channel counts, chosen by boiler type and how many independent circuits you're driving. All three include OpenTherm v4.2 and Matter bridging as standard — the channel count is the only thing that changes.
| Hub | Best for | Channels | Interfaces | Price inc. VAT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|
1-Channel HubR CCTFR6311G2D |
Combi boilers, heat pumps | 1 × Central heating | OpenTherm + relay + On/Off | £139.00 |
|
2-Channel HubR CCTFR6312G2D |
Conventional / system boilers with a hot water cylinder | 1 × Heating + 1 × Hot water | OpenTherm + relay + On/Off | £139.00 |
|
3-Channel HubR CCTFR6313G2D |
Larger homes with two heating zones plus a cylinder | 2 × Heating + 1 × Hot water | OpenTherm + relay + On/Off | £139.00 |
All three hubs are Boiler Plus compliant, so they satisfy Part L Building Regulations requirements for new-build and retrofit heating controls, and they connect Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) alongside the Zigbee mesh — the mesh keeps working even if your internet drops.
Kits: the fastest way in
You can buy every part of the Wiser system separately, but the Thermostat Kits and Multi-Zone Kits are cheaper for the same components and give you a working system out of the box. The pattern is simple: pick the Thermostat Kit that matches your boiler type if you just want the hub + a single room thermostat, or step up to the matching Multi-Zone Kit to add two TRVs and start room-by-room control from day one.
Thermostat Kits — hub + wireless room thermostat
| Kit | Includes | Suits | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thermostat Kit 1 — CCTFR6901G2D | 1-Channel HubR + Room Thermostat | Combi boilers, heat pumps | £170.00 |
| Thermostat Kit 2 — CCTFR6902G2D | 2-Channel HubR + Room Thermostat | Conventional boilers with a hot water cylinder | £195.00 |
| Thermostat Kit 3 — CCTFR6903G2D | 3-Channel HubR + 2 × Room Thermostats | Two heating zones + hot water (larger homes) | £270.00 |
Multi-Zone Kits — same as above, plus 2 × Radiator Thermostats
| Kit | Includes | Suits | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multi-Zone Kit 1 — CCTFR69041G2D | 1-Channel HubR + Room Thermostat + 2 × TRVs | Combi boilers — start zoning from day one | £315.00 |
| Multi-Zone Kit 2 — CCTFR69042G2D | 2-Channel HubR + Room Thermostat + 2 × TRVs | Conventional boilers with a cylinder | £330.00 |
Whichever kit you start with, the system is the same platform — add more Radiator Thermostats, an Underfloor Heating Controller for wet UFH, an Electrical Heat Switch for towel rails and electric UFH, and Smart Home sensors whenever you're ready. Up to 16 zones and 63 devices on a single hub.

Smart sensors, plugs and micro modules — the automation half
This is the part that genuinely widens the story. Where Wiser 1st Generation stopped at heating, the 2nd Gen ecosystem picks up the everyday things people usually stitch together from three or four apps — presence detection, leak protection, smoke alarms, lighting, blinds, appliance scheduling. All on the same Zigbee mesh, all controllable in the Wiser Home app or by Alexa, Google Assistant or Apple Home via the Matter bridge. Drayton's full list is documented on the Wiser Smart Home sensor and micro-module range page, and the Smart Home automation section shows the kinds of Moments and Automations you can wire together in-app.

Water Leak Sensor (CCT592012)
Battery-powered ZigBee flood detector with an audible local alarm and a smartphone alert the moment water hits the contacts. Tuck one under the bath, one behind the boiler, one under the washing machine — and pair with a Wiser Smart Plug to cut appliances automatically.
View £27.00 →
Smoke Alarm — Battery (CCT599002)
EN14604 and BS 5839 certified smoke alarm which links to up to 40 other Wiser alarms and sends push notifications when smoke or heat is detected. Long-life lithium cell, no wiring.

Smart Plug (WB704H1A0902)
13A UK plug for anything up to about 3 kW — towel rails, lamps, dehumidifiers, the coffee grinder — and, usefully, it doubles as a Zigbee range extender for TRVs at the far end of the house.
View £33.00 →
Power Micro Module (CCTFR6730)
Behind-the-switch smart control, scheduling, automation and energy monitoring for resistive loads up to 3200 W. Fits in a back box behind a normal light switch or wall plate.
View £47.00 →
LED Dimmer Micro Module (CCT5010-0003)
Smart LED dimming behind an existing momentary switch. Keep the local switch for in-room control; add scheduling, scenes and voice control through the Wiser Home app on top.
View £47.00 →Alongside these, the range also includes Motion Sensor, Window & Door Sensor, and a Shades Control Micro Module for motorised blinds and curtains. All of them are Zigbee-certified and require the 2nd Generation HubR (they will not pair with a 1st Generation Hub).
A cheap, quick way to move an EPC rating
Independent BEAMA research puts smart multi-zone heating controls among the highest-ROI upgrades you can make to an existing home. Moving from a single-thermostat setup to a system with individual smart TRVs typically shaves up to 18% off heating use from the thermostat itself, another 19% from proper per-room zoning, and a further 16% from Eco and Away Modes* — savings that SAP-model directly into your EPC score under the Time and Temperature Zone Controls (TTZC) category. In practice a Wiser Multi-Zone Kit plus TRVs on the main rooms is one of the cheapest ways to nudge a B or C property up a band without touching insulation, fabric or the boiler itself.
For Boiler Plus / Part L compliance on a new combi installation, any Wiser HubR configured for OpenTherm modulating control (or paired with the Wiser Radiator Thermostat range for load compensation) satisfies the additional efficiency measure requirement. For landlords and property developers, the same kit gives tenants app control and gives you a full Insights & Heat Report of how the heating is actually being used.
*Savings figures from BEAMA (2022) and Drayton user data (2021).
