Panasonic's Free Multi Z multi-split range does something a lot of UK homes and small offices genuinely need: it drives several independently controlled rooms — bedrooms, a home office, a living room — from a single outdoor condenser. One outside box instead of two, three, four or five. It uses R32 refrigerant across the range, and pairs with the ultra-slim TZ super-compact wall-mounted indoor units, built for tight spaces and quiet enough for bedrooms.

The whole point of Panasonic's Free Multi Z platform is space efficiency, inside and out — a slim 765mm indoor cabinet that fits above a door and one compact outdoor unit that avoids cluttering the back of the property with multiple condensers.

This guide walks through how the system works, exactly what the TZ super-compact indoor unit brings to the room, and — the part that matters most when specifying a system — which outdoor units pair with which combinations of indoor units. Combination charts are where most multi-split installations get sized wrongly, so we've broken every outdoor unit in the range down individually.

How a Panasonic multi-split system works

A multi-split system connects one outdoor condensing unit to two or more indoor units via refrigerant pipework. Each indoor unit is thermostatically controlled on its own, so the bedroom can run at a different temperature and schedule to the living room, all sharing a single outdoor box.

1

One outdoor unit, multiple pipes

The Free Multi Z outdoor unit has 2, 3, 4 or 5 refrigerant connection ports. Each port feeds one indoor unit through a dedicated pair of R32 refrigerant lines (liquid and gas).

2

Inverter modulates output

An inverter-driven rotary compressor ramps output up and down to match the combined real-time demand across every connected room, rather than cycling on and off.

3

Each room controls itself

Every TZ indoor unit has its own thermostat, remote and Wi-Fi control via the Panasonic Comfort Cloud app — plus Alexa and Google Assistant — so zones run to their own schedule and setpoint.

4

Heats and cools year-round

Every Free Multi Z outdoor unit is a reverse-cycle heat pump, providing cooling in summer and efficient heating down to −15°C outdoor ambient in winter, plus dehumidification.

The TZ super-compact indoor unit

The TZ range is Panasonic's most compact wall-mounted domestic indoor unit, purpose-built for rooms where a standard-height cassette or indoor cabinet won't fit. Every model in the range — from the 2.0kW right up to the 6.0kW — shares the same slim cabinet: 290mm high × 765mm wide × 214mm deep. Only the 7.1kW top-of-range steps up in size for the extra output.

  • Fits above a doorframe. At 290mm high, the smaller TZ units clear the average UK door opening with room to spare, freeing up prime wall space elsewhere in the room.
  • nanoe X air purification built in. Continuous release of hydroxyl radicals helps inhibit airborne pollutants, bacteria, viruses and odours — no filter cartridge to replace.
  • PM2.5 filtration as standard to capture fine airborne particulates, plus Aerowings directional airflow louvres to direct air more precisely around the room.
  • As quiet as 20 dB(A) in quiet mode — genuinely bedroom-friendly.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi via the Panasonic Comfort Cloud app, with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa voice control support.

Single-split vs multi-split at a glance

If you're only cooling and heating one room, a single-split unit is usually the simpler and cheaper answer. Multi-split earns its place from two rooms upwards, and the further up the head count you go, the more it saves on external plant space.

  Single-split Multi-split (Free Multi Z)
Rooms served 1 2–5 per outdoor unit
Outdoor units needed 1 per room Just 1 for the whole system
External wall clutter Grows with every zone Fixed — one condenser
Independent room control Yes Yes — each indoor unit runs independently
Best for A single room, or rooms far apart Multi-room homes, flats, small offices

Compatibility & combinations: which outdoor unit for which rooms

Every Panasonic Free Multi Z outdoor unit has two hard specification limits that dictate what it can drive:

  • Number of connection ports — hard-wired into the unit (2, 3, 4 or 5).
  • Combined indoor capacity range — the sum of the nominal cooling kW of every connected indoor unit must fall between the outdoor unit's minimum and maximum connectable range.

The combined indoor capacity does not equal the outdoor unit's nominal kW. Panasonic uses diversity — the assumption that not every room calls for full output at the same time — so the connectable indoor total is typically higher than the outdoor rating. A pair of 2.5kW indoor units (5.0kW combined) doesn't need a 5.0kW outdoor unit; the 4.1kW CU-2Z41CBE covers it comfortably.

Important: On the 2-connection CU-2Z41CBE, both ports must be used — the unit is not designed to run with a single indoor unit fitted. On 3-, 4- and 5-port outdoor units, unused ports can be capped, but every indoor unit connected must still land the total inside the connectable range.

TZ indoor unit compatibility

Every TZ super-compact indoor unit — from the 2.0kW CS-TZ20CKEW up to the 7.1kW CS-TZ71ZKEW — is compatible with every Free Multi Z outdoor unit in the range, provided the combined nominal cooling capacity of all connected indoor units lands inside that outdoor unit's connectable range. Panasonic's Free Multi Z platform also supports Etherea wall-mounted indoor units alongside TZ.

Worked examples using the CU-2Z41CBE (2-port, 3.2–6.0kW range)

The smallest outdoor unit is a good illustration of how combinations work in practice. All three of these pairings are valid:

Small home office + spare bedroom

2.0kW + 2.0kW = 4.0kW

2 × CS-TZ20CKEW on the CU-2Z41CBE. Two small rooms, sits neatly inside the 3.2–6.0kW range.

Bedroom + living room

2.5kW + 3.5kW = 6.0kW

CS-TZ25CKEW + CS-TZ35CKEW. At the top of the connectable range — still valid.

Two matched bedrooms

2.5kW + 2.5kW = 5.0kW

2 × CS-TZ25CKEW. Comfortable middle of the range, both rooms independently controlled.

Not valid: two large rooms

5.0kW + 3.5kW = 8.5kW

Exceeds the 6.0kW max. Step up to the CU-3Z52CBE (4.5–9.5kW) or above.

Sizing the outdoor unit for larger properties

The step up from the 2-port to the 3-, 4- and 5-port outdoor units follows the same logic — the combined nominal cooling of every connected indoor unit must fall inside the outdoor unit's connectable range. As a rough sizing guide:

  • Small flat, 2 rooms: CU-2Z41CBE with two small-to-medium TZ heads.
  • Flat or small home, 3 rooms: CU-3Z52CBE for smaller rooms, CU-3Z68CBE where one room is a larger living space.
  • Larger home, 4 rooms: CU-4Z68CBE for smaller rooms across the board, CU-4Z80CBE where the total load is higher.
  • Whole-home, 5 rooms: CU-5Z90CBE — the top of the domestic Free Multi Z range.

For the exact combination chart on the 3-, 4- and 5-port units, we always recommend cross-checking against Panasonic's official datasheet for the specific outdoor unit before ordering — the linked datasheets on each product page carry the full connectable-range matrix.

Pipe run limits also apply. On the CU-2Z41CBE, total system pipe length is 6–30m, maximum length to any one indoor unit is 3–20m, and maximum elevation difference between indoor and outdoor units is 10m. Larger outdoor units support longer runs and greater elevations — check the specific model before finalising the install plan.
