SELV — Safe by Design for Zone 1: The 93087AW operates the in-shower fan and LED at 12V SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage). Under BS 7671, SELV circuits do not constitute a shock hazard, so a Zone 1 installation above the shower tray is permitted without an RCD on the SELV circuit. The SELV transformer is included in the kit and must be located outside the bathroom zones (Zone 0, 1, and 2) — typically in the ceiling void above. The transformer's 230V primary supply must still be protected by a 30mA RCD per normal bathroom wiring practice.
Wiring Note: The 93087AW requires a 3-core feed to the SELV transformer (Permanent Live, Neutral, Switched Live from lighting circuit for timer). The transformer secondary wiring then feeds the fan and LED unit at 12V. Refer to the installation manual for the full wiring diagram. Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician.
Integrated 207-Lumen LED Light
The warm white LED (207 lumens) built into the baffle diffuser cover illuminates the shower enclosure directly from above. This eliminates shadows and the inadequate light levels common when a single-point room downlight is the only source. The LED is powered from the same SELV circuit as the fan, activating when the switch is turned on — no separate light circuit required.
SELV — Zone 1 Without an RCD
SELV systems limit voltage to 12V, below the threshold at which electric shock can occur in wet conditions. This makes the in-shower unit inherently safe regardless of whether the circuit has RCD protection — allowing installation directly above the shower rose in the most exposed part of Zone 1. The transformer is positioned safely in the ceiling void outside the bathroom zones.
Ghost™ At-Source Extraction
Identical in principle to the SSSFC, the Illumi's Ghost technology fan unit sits within the shower ceiling and captures steam at the point of generation. At 22 dB(A) low speed, the fan is essentially inaudible against the sound of a running shower. High speed (34 dB) provides maximum extraction for powerful shower heads or steam-heavy enclosures.
Baffle Diffuser Fascia
Unlike the standard SSSFC's traditional grille cover, the Illumi uses a circular baffle diffuser fascia that distributes LED light evenly across the shower space while maintaining airflow through the ventilation apertures. The smooth, rounded profile is resistant to limescale build-up in hard water areas and wipes clean without tools.
Adjustable Overrun Timer
The integral timer adjusts from 30 seconds to 30 minutes. When the light switch turns off, the fan continues for the set overrun period — continuing to extract residual humidity from the warm shower enclosure. The LED light extinguishes when the switch turns off; only the fan continues during the overrun. This meets Part F overrun requirements and prevents condensation from forming on the enclosure surfaces after the shower ends.

What is SELV and why does it matter in a shower?
SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) limits the electrical potential of a circuit to a maximum of 12V AC or 30V DC, defined in BS 7671 Section 414. At these voltages, even direct skin contact in wet conditions cannot produce a dangerous electric shock. This allows the Illumi's in-shower unit to be installed directly within Zone 1 — the active spray area of the shower — without any additional protective measures like an RCD. The 12V transformer simply converts mains supply to the safe SELV voltage and must be located outside the bathroom zones.
Where does the SELV transformer need to be installed?
The transformer must be positioned outside Zones 0, 1 and 2 of the bathroom — in practice this usually means in the ceiling void above the bathroom, accessible via an inspection hatch. The low-voltage secondary wiring then drops through the ceiling to the fan/LED unit. The transformer itself must not be installed in the bathroom zones even though its secondary output is SELV.
Does the LED light stay on during the fan overrun?
No. When the light switch is turned off, the LED extinguishes immediately while the fan continues to run for the set overrun period. The overrun function is purely for moisture extraction — operating the light during the overrun would not be desirable for occupants who have left the shower and turned off the light. The timer is controlled by the switched live signal from the light switch, so both functions track the switch state independently.

207 lumens is comparable to a 20–25W incandescent spotlight — equivalent to a modern LED GU10 downlight.
