12mm Wall Board Pack of 4 — 2.88m² XPS Insulated Core 100% Waterproof Complete Kit — Fixings Included
The Taurus Wet Room Wall Kit 12mm Pack of 4 is a complete, professional-grade tile backer board kit for creating a fully waterproof wall substrate in wet rooms, walk-in showers, and bathrooms prior to tiling. Each kit contains four 1200×600×12mm XPS-cored insulation boards with fibreglass mesh reinforcement and a cementitious tile-ready surface, plus all the fixings, waterproof joint tape, and Pro-Seal adhesive needed for a fully sealed installation. At 12mm thickness, this board is specifically suited to wall applications where it replaces standard plasterboard — providing greater stiffness between studwork or batten centres and a genuinely waterproof substrate behind the tile finish. Covers up to 2.88m² per pack.
Why 12mm for Walls?
Tile backer boards for walls need to span between studwork or battens without flexing. Standard 10mm boards used on floors are supported across their full face by the subfloor beneath; wall boards, by contrast, are fixed at their edges and must resist the weight and leverage of wall tiles across an unsupported span. The additional 2mm of thickness in a 12mm board makes a meaningful difference to stiffness and tile-holding capacity, particularly with large-format tiles or natural stone.
The 12mm Taurus wall board is designed as a like-for-like replacement for 12mm plasterboard in bathroom and wet room wall construction — with the critical difference that it is genuinely waterproof rather than merely moisture-resistant. Plasterboard, even moisture-resistant grades, will eventually break down behind tiles in a continuously wet environment. An XPS-cored tile backer board will not.
Tile Backer vs Plasterboard — Why It Matters
| Property | 12mm Tile Backer (This Kit) | Moisture-Resistant Plasterboard |
|---|---|---|
| Waterproof | ✓ Yes — fully waterproof core and faces | ✗ No — water-resistant only, not waterproof |
| Mould & Mildew Resistant | ✓ Yes — inorganic materials, no mould food | ✗ Limited — gypsum core supports mould growth when wet |
| Tile Adhesion | ✓ Excellent — cement face bonds to C2 adhesive | Moderate — requires priming |
| Suitable for Wet Rooms | ✓ Specifically designed for wet areas | ✗ Not recommended for direct water exposure |
| Thermal Insulation | ✓ XPS core provides good insulation value | ✗ Minimal insulation |
| Structural Integrity When Wet | ✓ Unaffected by water — will not soften or crumble | ✗ Gypsum softens and loses strength when saturated |
Key Benefits
What's in the Kit
- 4× Tile backer boards — 1200 × 600 × 12mm (XPS core, fibreglass mesh, cementitious faces)
- Board fixings — screws and stainless steel washers for mechanical fixing into studwork or battens
- Pro-Seal / Fix-MD waterproofing adhesive — for bonding boards to masonry and sealing joints
- Waterproof joint reinforcing tape — for sealing board-to-board joints, internal corners, and perimeter edges
Note: Tile adhesive and grout are not included. For floor boarding, see the Taurus Wet Room Floor Kit 10mm (AP201005).
Installation Overview
Ensure the wall structure is plumb, sound, and free from movement before installation. Stud walls should have centres no greater than 600mm to provide edge support for each board. Fix boards in a staggered (brick-bond) joint pattern, starting from the bottom of the wall. Fix mechanically with the included screws and washers at approximately 300mm centres, at least 15mm from board edges and 50mm from corners. Apply the included waterproof joint tape over all board-to-board joints and into all internal corners, bedding into Pro-Seal adhesive applied with a brush. Allow adhesive to cure fully before tiling. Use a C2-rated flexible cementitious tile adhesive — notch trowel size to tile format. For full installation guidance, refer to the Taurus installation instructions included in the kit.
🔩 Fixing to Timber Stud Walls
Fix boards with the included screws and washers directly into the timber studs at 300mm centres. Ensure studs are at 400mm or 600mm centres — the 1200mm board length divides exactly to both. Where stud centres exceed 600mm, add horizontal noggins between studs to provide intermediate support for horizontal board edges. All vertical and horizontal joints must fall over a stud or noggin — floating joints in unsupported mid-span positions are not acceptable.
🧱 Fixing to Masonry / Blockwork Walls
On blockwork or brick walls, boards can be fully bonded using the included Fix-MD waterproofing adhesive applied in large dabs or as a full-bed to both the wall and board back. A temporary prop or temporary fixing screws may be needed to hold boards in position while the adhesive achieves initial set. On highly absorbent masonry, wet the wall surface lightly before applying adhesive to prevent premature suction. Once cured, tape all joints with the included waterproof tape before tiling.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the 12mm wall boards on the floor as well?
Technically the boards are the same material, but the 12mm thickness adds unnecessary build-up height on floors where 10mm is sufficient, and costs more. For floor applications, the Taurus Wet Room Floor Kit 10mm (AP201005) is the correct specification. Use 12mm on walls and 10mm on floors unless your installer advises otherwise for a specific project requirement.
How many packs do I need for a typical wet room?
Each pack covers 2.88m² of wall area. To calculate packs needed: measure the total wall area to be boarded (perimeter in metres × height in metres, minus door and window openings), add 10–15% for waste and cuts, then divide by 2.88. A typical 1200×900mm shower enclosure on three walls at 2.1m high is approximately 6.3m² — requiring three packs of 4 (8.64m²) to provide adequate coverage with cutting waste.
Can I tile directly onto these boards without additional tanking?
Yes — with the joints correctly taped and sealed using the included materials. The boards themselves are waterproof, and the Pro-Seal adhesive and joint tape complete the waterproof layer at every junction. For shower areas that will receive very high water volumes, applying an additional brush-applied tanking membrane over the boards before tiling is good practice in accordance with BS 5385 and is recommended by most wet room system manufacturers.
What tile adhesive should be used?
Use a C2-rated flexible cementitious tile adhesive — for example a C2TE or S1 classified adhesive. In full wet room or shower applications, avoid ready-mixed or universal adhesives which are not formulated for continuous water immersion. Tile adhesive is not included in this kit.
Are these boards suitable for steam rooms?
XPS tile backer boards perform well in high-humidity environments, but steam rooms present a more demanding application than standard wet rooms. For steam room walls, consult the full Taurus wet room system documentation or contact the supplier for specific guidance on steam room construction requirements, which typically include fully bonded tanking membranes over the backer boards.
