The Victron VE.Bus BMS NG is the battery management system for Victron Lithium NG batteries (12.8 V, 25.6 V and 51.2 V LiFePO4) in systems built around a VE.Bus inverter/charger or inverter such as the MultiPlus, MultiPlus-II or Quattro. It is not for Lithium Smart batteries without the NG designation.
It watches every cell and, through the VE.Bus link, turns off inversion on cell undervoltage and reduces or stops charging on cell overvoltage or overtemperature, while its load disconnect, charge disconnect and pre-alarm outputs protect everything else on the DC side. Built-in Bluetooth Smart gives configuration, monitoring and firmware updates in VictronConnect, and a Remote panel port accepts a GX device, VE.Bus Smart dongle or Digital Multi Control.
Banks of up to 50 batteries at 12 V or 24 V (25 at 48 V) give up to 192 kWh, 384 kWh and 128 kWh of storage respectively.

Installer Safety Note – Low Cell Voltage Shutdown Is a Last Resort
Installation must be carried out by qualified, trained installers in line with national wiring regulations. A low cell voltage shutdown leaves only about 1 Ah per 100 Ah of reserve, and a residual draw of 10 mA can damage a 200 Ah battery left discharged for more than 8 days. Use the discharge floor or the remote on/off terminal to shut the system down well before cell undervoltage is reached.
Check VE.Bus Compatibility Before Ordering
The BMS has no battery negative connection; it takes battery negative from the VE.Bus, so it cannot be used without a VE.Bus inverter/charger or inverter. VE.Bus firmware must be xxxx489 or higher. Between xxxx415 and xxxx489 the VE.Bus BMS or ESS assistant must be installed on the unit, and below xxxx415 a VE.Bus error 15 occurs. Units with processors labelled 19XXXXX or 20XXXXX are not supported; use the original VE.Bus BMS with Lithium Smart batteries instead.
Charging From an Alternator and Controlling Other Chargers
For alternator charging, wire the charge disconnect output to the remote on/off H terminal of an Orion-Tr Smart DC-DC charger, or to a SolidSwitch 104 controlling an external alternator regulator. With a GX device running Venus OS 2.80 or later, enable DVCC so solar chargers and compatible devices only charge when the BMS allows it.
Key Features
VE.Bus Control
Disables inverting in VE.Bus inverters and inverter/chargers on cell undervoltage, and reduces charge current on cell overvoltage or overtemperature. On low cell voltage the inverter/charger switches to charger-only mode until the battery recovers.
Cell-Level Protection
Monitors and protects each individual cell of the battery or bank, triggering a pre-alarm for imminent undervoltage and disconnecting or shutting down loads and chargers when limits are reached.
Bluetooth and Instant Readout
Configure, monitor and update through the VictronConnect app. Instant Readout displays state of charge, battery temperature, warnings and alarms in the device list without needing to connect.
GX Device Connectivity
The Remote panel port takes a GX device, VE.Bus Smart dongle or Digital Multi Control. The GX-Pow output powers the GX device, and an optional AC-DC adapter on Aux-In keeps it running for remote access when the system has shut down.
Load, Charge and Pre-Alarm Outputs
Normally high outputs control BatteryProtect, inverters, DC-DC converters and chargers with remote on/off terminals, while the pre-alarm output drives a relay, LED or buzzer at least 30 seconds before load disconnect.
True Remote On/Off
Switches the whole system on and off while the BMS stays connected to battery positive, keeping the Multi in low power mode even when AC input is present. Ideal for shutting down at a set state of charge.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the VE.Bus BMS NG and the smallBMS NG?
The VE.Bus BMS NG connects to VE.Bus inverter/chargers and inverters and controls them directly over VE.Bus, and it adds a GX device connection. The smallBMS NG has no VE.Bus interface and is intended for systems without MultiPlus or Quattro units.
Do I need the mains detector?
Not for the new-style MultiPlus 12/1600/70 and 12/2000/80, MultiPlus-II, Quattro-II or inverter models. The mains detector restarts an inverter/charger when AC returns after a low cell voltage shutdown, and is only needed on older units.
What happens if I disconnect the BMS?
If the inverter/charger cannot find the BMS it enters an emergency mode, charging the batteries at a maximum of 5 A up to 12, 24 or 48 V. In that mode it will not invert once AC input is removed.
The batteries are empty and the inverter/charger will not charge. What should I do?
Connect a small battery charger, for example 5 A, and wait for the battery voltage to rise back to 12, 24 or 48 V depending on the system voltage. The inverter/charger can then resume charging.
Can it display state of charge on a GX device?
Yes. Unlike the older VE.Bus BMS V2, the NG version sends state of charge over VE.Bus. Enable the Battery monitor option on the MultiPlus or Quattro, using Remote VEConfigure or VictronConnect. Only state of charge is forwarded to the GX device.
How are solar chargers controlled?
With a GX device and DVCC enabled, the GX device sets the maximum charge current of solar chargers, Inverter RS and Multi RS to zero when the BMS requests that charging stops. Without a GX device, the charge disconnect output must control each charger via its remote on/off terminal, a BatteryProtect or a Cyrix-Li-Charge.
