The Victron smallBMS NG is an all-in-one battery management system (BMS) for Victron Lithium NG batteries (not the Lithium Smart range without the NG designation). It is the simple, cost-effective alternative to the VE.Bus BMS NG, and because it has no VE.Bus interface it is not suitable for MultiPlus or Quattro inverter/chargers.
It protects every cell of the battery bank through a load disconnect output, a charge disconnect output and an adjustable pre-alarm output, with a remote on/off terminal and a configurable discharge floor. Built-in Bluetooth Smart lets you configure, monitor and update firmware from the VictronConnect app, including Instant Readout of state of charge, temperature, warnings and alarms straight from the device list.
Lithium NG batteries (12.8 V, 25.6 V and 51.2 V LiFePO4) can be wired in series, parallel or both to build 12 V, 24 V or 48 V banks of up to 50 batteries (25 at 48 V), giving a maximum of 192 kWh, 384 kWh and 128 kWh respectively.

Lithium NG Batteries Only – Not for VE.Bus Systems
The smallBMS NG works only with Victron Lithium NG batteries. It cannot be used with Lithium Smart batteries without the NG designation, and it cannot be used with VE.Bus MultiPlus or Quattro inverter/chargers. For systems built around a VE.Bus inverter/charger, use the VE.Bus BMS NG instead.
Installer Safety Note – Low Cell Voltage Shutdown Is a Last Resort
Installation must be carried out by qualified, trained installers following national wiring regulations. Victron stresses that a BMS shutdown on low cell voltage should be a last resort only. After one, roughly 1 Ah per 100 Ah of reserve is left, and a residual current of just 10 mA can damage a 200 Ah battery left discharged for more than 8 days. Use the discharge floor or the remote on/off terminal to switch the system off well before that point.
Documentation Discrepancy – Pre-Alarm Output Current
Victron's feature description quotes the pre-alarm output at 1 A, while its specification table lists 500 mA. Size any relay, LED or buzzer on the pre-alarm output to the lower 500 mA figure. The pre-alarm output is not short-circuit protected.
Controlling Solar Chargers and Other Devices
SmartSolar MPPT 150/45 and higher and 250/60 and higher (plus BlueSolar MPPT 150/70 and 150/80 CAN-bus) can be controlled directly by the charge disconnect output. Smaller MPPT models up to SmartSolar 150/35 need a VE.Direct non-inverting remote on/off cable (ASS030550320). Smart IP43 chargers connect directly, and other chargers can be controlled through a Cyrix-Li-Charge.
Key Features
Load Disconnect Output
Normally high and free-floating when cell undervoltage is imminent. It drives the remote on/off input of inverters, DC-DC converters and BatteryProtect units, and at up to 1 A it can even switch a high-current relay or contactor.
Charge Disconnect Output
Normally high and free-floating on imminent cell overvoltage or overtemperature, stopping chargers such as the Smart IP43, a Cyrix-Li-Charge relay, a Cyrix-Li-ct combiner or a BatteryProtect. Rated 500 mA, and not suitable for inductive loads such as relay coils.
Adjustable Pre-Alarm Output
Gives a visible or audible warning at least 30 seconds before the load disconnect output opens on cell undervoltage. Drives a relay, LED or buzzer, and the pre-alarm level can be adjusted in VictronConnect.
Bluetooth Smart and Instant Readout
Wireless configuration, monitoring and firmware updates through VictronConnect. Instant Readout shows voltage, current, state of charge, remaining time, battery temperature and consumed Ah in the device list without connecting.
Configurable Discharge Floor
Sets the minimum state of charge so enough energy remains for self-discharge. A low SoC warning activates the pre-alarm output, and reaching the floor triggers a low SoC alarm that switches off the load disconnect output.
Remote On/Off Terminal
Remote L and H terminals let a switch, relay contact or battery-referenced signal turn the load and charge disconnect outputs on or off. Two LED indicators show Bluetooth status (blue) and warnings or alarms (red).

Lithium NG Battery Current Limits
The BMS protects the bank, but chargers and loads must be configured within the battery limits. Maximum continuous charge and discharge is 1C; Victron recommends 0.3C charging and 0.5C discharging for best battery life.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the smallBMS NG with a MultiPlus or Quattro?
No. The smallBMS NG has no VE.Bus interface, so it is not suitable for VE.Bus MultiPlus and Quattro inverter/chargers. Use the VE.Bus BMS NG for those systems.
Does it work with Lithium Smart batteries?
No. It is designed for Victron Lithium NG batteries only, and should not be confused with the Lithium Smart batteries that do not carry the NG designation.
What can the load disconnect output control directly?
All VE.Direct inverters and Inverter Smart models, Tr-type DC-DC converters with a remote on/off connector (plus the Orion 12/24-20 and Orion XS), BatteryProtect and Smart BatteryProtect, and the Cyrix-Li-Load. VE.Bus inverters and Inverter Compact units rated 1200 VA or more need an inverting remote on/off cable (ASS030550100 or -120).
Why won't the BMS switch on after installation?
The remote on/off terminal needs either the default wire loop between Remote L and Remote H or an on/off switch fitted between them. Without one, the BMS does not switch on. The Bat+ and Bat− terminals must also be connected.
How do I update the firmware?
Firmware updates are done through the VictronConnect app, which notifies you when a newer version is available. During an update the charge disconnect output opens to prevent charging, and if the update fails the load disconnect output opens after 120 seconds as a safety measure so you can retry.
What cable and fuse does the BMS need?
The supply cable and fuse are not supplied. Victron recommends a fuse between 0.3 A and 2.5 A depending on what is connected to the load disconnect and pre-alarm outputs, and the Bat+ terminal must be fused.
