The Vaillant coding plug for cooling function (0020269259) is the coding resistor that lets a Vaillant aroTHERM plus heat pump run in active cooling mode as well as heating. It is the optional accessory Vaillant specifies for aroTHERM plus outdoor units labelled S2, which leave the factory without cooling enabled.
Fitting the plug adds the cooling function after installation, so there is no need to replace the outdoor unit. Cooling is then switched on through the Cooling technology setting on the indoor unit control or the optional system control, giving you a simple, low-cost way to offer heating and cooling from one R290 monobloc heat pump.

How it works
Units labelled S2 are delivered without cooling mode. The cooling function is activated through the coding resistor plus a setting on the indoor unit control and the optional system control. In cooling mode the heat pump extracts heat from the building and releases it outdoors.
Safety: competent persons only
Any work that requires the outdoor unit to be opened must only be carried out by a competent person with knowledge of R290 refrigerant. Isolate all power supplies at all poles, secure against switching back on, wait at least 3 minutes for the capacitors to discharge and check that no voltage is present. R290 is flammable, so keep ignition sources away and use a gas sniffer before working on an open unit.
Compatibility and system checks
Only suitable for aroTHERM plus outdoor units with S2 in the model name. Check the data plate before ordering, and note the plug is supplied for use with both earlier and later (v2) aroTHERM plus units. Fitting the plug alone does not start cooling: the Cooling technology setting must also be set to Active cooling. Make sure the emitters, pipework insulation and system design are suitable for cooling before enabling it.
Key features
Unlocks cooling mode
Enables active cooling on aroTHERM plus S2 outdoor units that were supplied heating only.
Simple plug-in fitting
A coding resistor that fits the dedicated coding resistor slot for cooling mode on the outdoor unit control board.
Vaillant accessory
Listed by Vaillant as the coding resistor for active cooling, part code 0020269259.
Retrofit friendly
Add cooling after installation without replacing the heat pump or the existing heating system.
Controlled from the indoor unit
Cooling is enabled and managed via the indoor unit control and the optional system control.
Built for R290 monoblocs
Designed for the aroTHERM plus range using R290 refrigerant with a GWP of 3.
Fitting overview
1
Isolate and wait
Switch off all power supplies, secure against reconnection and wait at least 3 minutes before opening the unit.
2
Fit the coding resistor
With the casing removed, plug the resistor into the coding resistor slot for cooling mode on the outdoor unit control board, following the Vaillant installation instructions.
3
Enable cooling
On the indoor unit control set Cooling technology to Active cooling, then configure cooling on the optional system control if fitted.
Installer note
Allow for the larger minimum clearance to the wall of 250 mm in heating and cooling mode, compared with 200 mm for heating only.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Vaillant cooling coding plug do?
It is the coding resistor that authorises an aroTHERM plus S2 heat pump to run in cooling mode. Without it, S2 units operate in heating mode only.
Which heat pumps is it for?
It is intended for aroTHERM plus outdoor units labelled S2 in the model name, such as the VWL 35/6, 55/6 and 75/6 230V S2. Always check the data plate on your unit.
Is fitting the plug enough to get cooling?
No. After fitting the plug, set Cooling technology to Active cooling on the indoor unit control, and configure cooling on the optional system control if one is installed.
Who should fit it?
A competent person with knowledge of R290 refrigerant, because the outdoor unit must be opened. Isolate the power at all poles and wait 3 minutes before starting.
What outdoor temperatures can the unit cool at?
The S2 units operate in cooling mode at outdoor temperatures from 15°C to 46°C. Outside these limits the product switches off.
What does fault F.042 mean?
F.042 is the coding resistor fault, shown when the resistor is damaged or not set. Check that the coding resistor is fitted correctly.
