The Vaillant heat exchanger module (0020222285) is a wall-mounted plate heat exchanger that separates the glycol-filled heat pump circuit from the heating system circuit. Because an air source heat pump sits outdoors, the fluid passing through it needs frost protection, and filling an entire heating system with glycol is costly. This module keeps the glycol in a small outdoor loop while the radiators and underfloor heating stay on ordinary system water.
Inside is a forty-plate heat exchanger and a modulating, ErP A rated circulating pump that Vaillant states is 35% more energy efficient than a standard pump. Integral fill and flush points, air bleed valves on both circuits and a safety valve with drain connection simplify commissioning. The module is compact (500 × 250 × 360 mm) and weighs 12 kg, and it is designed for use with the Vaillant aroTHERM heat pump range.

Safety and regulatory
Installation must be carried out by a competent person, and all electrical work by a suitably qualified person in line with BS 7671 and, where applicable, Part P. Isolate and secure the power supply before any work. The module is for internal installation only, in a room protected against frost. Use only frost and corrosion protection agents that are suitable for the system, because unsuitable additives can damage seals.
Compatibility and sizing
The module is designed for the Vaillant aroTHERM range, and Vaillant lists it as a system separation accessory for aroTHERM plus. Check your heat pump's flow rate against the pressure curves in Vaillant's installation manual, which publishes the available head for the heating circuit and the pressure loss of the glycol circuit with water and with 50% glycol.
What is in the box
1 hydraulic module, 1 wall hanging bracket, 6 × 1 in flat gaskets, 2 × 1¼ in flat gaskets and the installation and operating instructions. Use only the original gaskets supplied.
Key features
Separates glycol from the heating circuit
Only a small proportion of the system needs glycol. The module also prevents contamination of the glycol circuit when radiators are removed, drained or refilled.
Forty-plate heat exchanger
A plate heat exchanger with forty plates transfers energy from the heat pump circuit to the heating circuit as efficiently as possible.
Modulating ErP A pump
The modulating circuit pump is ErP A rated and up to 35% more efficient than a standard pump, preparing the heating circuit for future legislation. Maximum consumption is 45 W.
Fill and flush points built in
Integral filler system and two fill/drain taps let you fill, flush and drain the heat pump glycol circuit quickly, at no extra cost, alongside a safety valve with a drain connection.
Air bleed on both circuits
Dedicated air bleed valves on the heat pump circuit and the heating circuit help stop air becoming trapped in the system.
Compact and wall hung
At 500 × 250 × 360 mm and 12 kg it is easy to site. A hanging bracket is supplied, and the unit lifts onto it for simple wall mounting.

Frequently asked questions
What does the heat exchanger module do?
It separates the glycol circuit that runs through the outdoor heat pump from the water in the heating system. Frost protection is then only needed in the small heat pump loop, rather than throughout every radiator, pipe and cylinder coil.
Which heat pumps is it designed for?
Vaillant designs it for use with the aroTHERM heat pump range and lists it as a system separation accessory for aroTHERM plus. Check your heat pump's installation manual for the hydraulic requirements of your system.
Can I install it outdoors or in a garage?
No. Vaillant specifies internal installation only, and the room must be sufficiently protected against frost. Keep it away from dusty or corrosive atmospheres, and do not mount it above a product that could emit steam or grease, or below one that might leak.
What power supply does the pump need?
The pump runs from a 230 V, 50 Hz supply with a maximum consumption of 45 W and an IP X4 protection rating. Vaillant's manual specifies a minimum cable of 3G0.5, and the connection must be made by a suitably qualified person.
How do I fill and bleed the heat pump circuit?
Use the integral filler system. In summary, connect the filler pump to tap B, run a pipe from tap C into a container to catch glycol, close the main tap A, open B and C, fill the circuit, then close B and C and reopen A. Open the air bleed valve on the heat pump circuit while filling, and bleed the heating circuit separately. Follow the full procedure in Vaillant's installation manual.
What is the maximum working pressure?
The maximum admissible water pressure is 3.0 bar and the minimum is 0.5 bar. Flush the supply pipework before installation, and add a corrosion inhibitor if oxygen-permeable plastic pipe is used in the heating system.
