The Vaillant aroSTOR VWL B 200/5 UK (article no. 0010024440) is a self-contained, floor-standing heat pump hot water cylinder: a 200-litre stainless steel unvented cylinder with the heat pump built into the same column. It makes domestic hot water only, takes its heat from air, either from the room it stands in or through insulated 160 mm ducts to outside, and needs no outdoor unit, no refrigerant pipework on site and no boiler or heating connection. It only needs mains water, a 230 V supply and an air route.
It uses R290 natural refrigerant (GWP 3, 0.15 kg sealed charge) and reaches 60 °C on the heat pump alone, with a 1.2 kW titanium immersion element for boost, 65 °C and anti-legionella cycles. Efficiency is A+ (132 % ηWH) with a COP of 3.19 and about 775 kWh a year for the L load profile. The unvented kit (18 l expansion vessel, safety assembly and tundish) is supplied in the box, and the unit has PV and low-tariff control inputs.
This model offers compact footprint and a 1,458 mm height. The stainless steel tank has no sacrificial anode and carries a 5-year tank warranty. At over 50 kg it ships with a transport bag for a two-person carry.

Safety and regulatory
This is an unvented (mains pressure) cylinder. It must be installed and commissioned by a competent person to the Building Regulations (Part G3 in England and Wales), with the discharge pipework run through the supplied tundish to a safe, visible point. Complete the Benchmark commissioning checklist, which is needed to keep the guarantee. Electrical work must meet BS 7671: fit a permanent isolator with at least 3 mm contact gap (8 A) and 30 mA RCD protection, and do not switch the supply with an external timer. Installation involves no refrigerant work, but anything that opens the unit or touches the R290 circuit must be done by a person competent with flammable refrigerants. Fill the cylinder with water before switching on, or the heating coil is damaged and the guarantee is voided.
Compatibility and siting
Intended for domestic hot water; Vaillant classes direct commercial or industrial use as improper use. Install in a dry, frost-proof room, away from bedrooms because the unit transmits vibration to the floor and walls. Never connect it to internal extract ducts (bathroom, shower room or kitchen extractors). If it is ducted to outside (room-sealed), it must not be sited within 500 m of the coast. Keep the intake air free of solvents, sprays, chlorinated cleaners and dust. Air must be drawn within -7 °C to +45 °C; the heat pump can reach 60 °C up to 35 °C air, falling to 55 °C at 45 °C, and outside the range the element does the heating.
Key features
Heat pump and cylinder in one
Compressor, evaporator, fan and controller sit in the top of the cylinder column. There is no outdoor unit and no split pipework, so installation is plumbing, ducting and a plug-in style electrical connection.
R290 natural refrigerant
GWP 3, ODP 0, 0.15 kg in a sealed circuit. R290 lets the unit deliver 60 °C with no back-up heater while keeping a strong COP.
A+ efficiency
132 % water heating efficiency, COP 3.19 (EN 16147, A7, profile L) and 775 kWh a year annual consumption, a large saving over direct electric heating.
Stainless steel, low maintenance
Stainless steel tank with 50 mm polyurethane foam insulation, 1.61 kWh/24 h standing loss at 55 °C and no anode to replace. Five years on the tank, two on other components.
Titanium back-up element
1.2 kW titanium immersion heater for boost, up to 65 °C, and an anti-legionella cycle (60 to 70 °C, 1 to 99 day interval). Titanium resists limescale better than copper.
PV and tariff ready
PV mode with two levels (PV ECO up to 60 °C on the heat pump, PV MAX up to 65 °C with the element) and a low-tariff load-relief input, plus programmable time periods and a 43 °C minimum-temperature function.
How it gets its air
The unit has two 160 mm air connections (inlet and outlet). Choose the arrangement that suits the room; all three use the same unit.

How it works
Requirements
Fully ducted
Both ducts go to outside. The room is not cooled and its ventilation is unaffected. Suits small rooms such as utility or store rooms.
Keep at least 220 mm between the duct ends to stop recirculation. Not within 500 m of the coast.
Partly ducted
One duct to outside, the other open to the room. The room acts as the heat source and is cooled by incoming outdoor air.
Room at least 20 m³. Existing ventilation must cover 400 m³/h plus normal room ventilation.
No ducting
Air is drawn from and returned to the same room, which is cooled by the unit.
Room at least 20 m³ and 2.20 m high, with ventilation. Keep the cold exhaust air from re-entering the intake.
Duct design
Use insulated ducts of 160 mm or larger to avoid condensation, and fit protective grilles or roof terminals on the openings. The maximum combined length of intake plus outlet (L1 + L2) is 10 m for flexible duct or 20 m for rigid duct, plus two 90° elbows. In rigid runs, each elbow, attachment or mesh adds pressure loss equal to about 5 m of straight duct, so count them. Allow 25 mm clearance around the unit and 300 mm at the top and front.
Heat-up and hot water output
Recovery times and usable volume
After first start-up, Vaillant states the heat pump needs 5 to 12 hours to reach 55 °C, depending on air and cold water temperature. A full re-heat at 7 °C air takes about 7 h 04 min (EN 16147). The unit delivers up to 247 litres of mixed hot water at 40 °C (V40, from the ErP data). It is designed to stay energised and re-heat on a programme rather than be switched off between uses.

Data note
The installation manual's technical-data table quotes lower EN 16147 figures (COP 2.99 for the 200 L, 3.00 for the 270 L) than Vaillant's UK technical leaflet and ErP data sheet. This page uses the leaflet and ErP figures, which match the A+ rating (132 % / 130 %). The manual and the leaflet also give different air temperature ranges: -7 to +45 °C in the manual and -7 to +35 °C in the leaflet. This page shows the manual's operating range together with the 35 °C limit for 60 °C hot water.

Frequently asked questions
Does it need a boiler, solar thermal or an outdoor unit?
No. It is a stand-alone hot water heat pump. It needs mains water, a 230 V supply and an air route. There is no refrigerant work on site, so no refrigerant connections are made during installation. It can sit alongside any heating system, because it does not connect to one.
How long does it take to heat up, and how much hot water does it give?
The first heat-up to 55 °C takes 5 to 12 hours. A full re-heat at 7 °C air takes about 7 h 04 min. It supplies up to 247 litres of mixed water at 40 °C. Leave it energised and use the time programme so it re-heats when you want it to.
How does it get its air, and what ducting do I need?
Choose fully ducted, partly ducted or unducted siting. Ducts must be insulated, 160 mm or larger, with a combined intake plus outlet length of up to 10 m flexible or 20 m rigid (plus two 90° elbows). Never connect to extract ducts from bathrooms or kitchens, and fit grilles or roof terminals on the openings.
Can it work with solar PV or an off-peak tariff?
Yes. PV mode uses two potential-free signals (PV ECO up to 60 °C on the heat pump, PV MAX up to 65 °C with the element). A low-tariff input can limit operation to cheap-rate periods. The PV function and tariff mode share the same contacts and cannot be used together. Use the unit's own time programming rather than a timer on the supply.
What do I need to buy separately?
The unvented kit is included. You still need air ducting and terminals, a drain valve, 22 mm copper pipework, a thermostatic mixing valve if required, and a way to run the condensate to a drain. An optional twin flue kit is available separately.
What guarantee does it have, and does it need servicing?
The stainless steel tank has a 5-year warranty and other components 2 years. Register within one month of installation and have it serviced annually by a competent person, recorded in Benchmark. The service covers the safety valves, expansion vessel, evaporator cleaning, condensate drain and the immersion heater for scale.
