The Salamander CT85 Xtra is a 2.2 bar, single-ended, positive head regenerative pump that boosts either the hot or the cold water pressure to an individual outlet such as a hot pillar tap, in a gravity-fed (tank-fed) positive head system. It is a hard-working, affordable pump from the best-selling CT Xtra range.
Built for installers, it is compact enough for tight airing cupboards, quiet at just 52 dBA (CT Xtra holds the Quiet Mark), WRAS approved and backed by a 3-year warranty. Fully automatic and flow operated, it switches on when the natural flow reaches 2 L/min per side. Product code: CT85XTRA.

Gravity-fed systems only
Never fit a CT Xtra pump to the cold water mains, a shared supply, a combination boiler or an unvented cylinder. Installation must comply with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999, IET Wiring Regulations and Building Regulations. Incorrect installation can cause injury or property damage and invalidates the warranty.
Bathroom zones (BS 7671)
The pump must not be installed in Zone 0, 1 or 2 as defined in BS 7671:2018. It can be sited 0.6 m away from the bath or shower. The pump must be connected via the fitted plug to an accessible socket, or via a fused spur fitted by a Part P qualified installer, with all pipework cross-bonded to IET Regulations.
Positive head only: check the flow before you buy
A positive head pump needs a natural flow of at least 2 L/min of hot and of cold from each pumped outlet (and 4 L/min mixed). If any outlet is below this, or the highest point after the pump is within 610 mm of the cistern base, fit a universal (negative head) pump instead. Negative head is also needed for electric showers, dishwashers and washing machines.
Not suitable to pump against cold mains
A single-ended positive head pump is not suitable to pump hot water against cold mains water. Where the cold supply is mains fed, choose a universal (negative head) pump or the appropriate Salamander mains booster.
Stored hot water temperature
Stored hot water must not exceed 60 °C. Where temperature cannot be controlled accurately, for example with solar panels, air source heat pumps or boiler thermostat control only, an approved HWS TMV blending valve must be used. Allow a minimum of 136 litres of usable cold storage for a shower only.
Rated pressure: 2.2 bar closed head
This page uses the manufacturer's published closed-head figure of 2.2 bar. Some installation-guide product descriptions label this model as 2.5 bar, but the performance table in the same guide, and the manufacturer's product page, give 2.2 bar closed head.
Key features
Single-ended regenerative pump
A single impeller boosts either hot or cold to an individual outlet, such as a hot pillar tap, or to multiple outlets on one supply.
2.2 bar boost
2.2 bar closed head, 2.0 bar at 4 L/min and 1.7 bar at 8 L/min to lift a weak hot or cold supply.
Quiet in operation
Just 52 dBA and awarded Quiet Mark, so it suits airing cupboards close to bedrooms.
Compact size
186.7 mm long x 120 mm wide x 160 mm high excluding hoses, for fitting into tight spaces.
Install-ready kit
Anti-vibration feet, isolating inlet valve and 2 push-fit hoses with filter and flat washers, plus a 1.5 m pre-wired cable with 3 A fused plug.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a single and a twin pump?
A single pump has one impeller and supplies either hot or cold water to single or multiple outlets. A twin pump has two impellers and boosts both hot and cold, which suits showers and bathrooms. Check the natural flow: a positive head pump needs at least 2 L/min per side before it will start.
Is my system suitable for a positive head pump?
Measure the natural flow at the outlets to be pumped: at least 2 L/min is required. If you cannot measure it, a positive head pump is generally suitable when there is more than 600 mm between the base of the cold water cistern and the highest point after the pump. If in doubt, choose a universal pump.
Can I fit it to the mains, a combi boiler or an unvented cylinder?
No. CT Xtra pumps are for gravity-fed, tank-fed systems only. Fitting to the cold mains, shared supplies, combination boilers or unvented cylinders is not permitted and invalidates the warranty. Salamander's mains booster range is designed for those applications.
How much cold water storage do I need?
Usable cold storage must meet the whole pumped demand: a minimum of 136 litres for a shower only, 227 litres per bathroom, or 364 litres for one bathroom plus an en-suite. Take cold supplies from the opposite side of the cistern to the mains inlet.
What about hot water temperature, solar or heat pumps?
The stored hot water must not exceed 60 °C and must be controlled by a cylinder thermostat or thermostatic valve. Where it cannot be accurately controlled, such as solar or air source heat pump systems, use an approved HWS TMV blending valve to protect the pump.
What installation points must I follow?
Fit a flange where needed, fit anti-vibration hoses straight and finger-tight plus a quarter turn, keep solder flux away from the pump, never fit a non-return valve or air vent on the pump supply, and keep 100 mm clear on all sides for ventilation. Flush the pipework and discharge air through the pump before connecting the outlet pipework, and never run the pump dry. The manufacturer's PumpWise technical helpline is available on 0191 516 2002.
What maintenance and warranty conditions apply?
Run the pump for at least 5 minutes every 4 weeks to stop the seal sticking. The 3-year UK warranty requires installation in line with the manufacturer's guide and warranty registration within 15 days of purchase.
