The Elterm SHE-OC 40 is a fully insulated hydraulic low loss header rated to 40kW, designed to hydraulically separate the primary heat source circuit (boiler or heat pump) from the secondary heating circuit(s). Fitted with 1" (25mm) threaded connections, it is the most widely specified size in the Elterm SHE-OC range and is commonly paired with domestic and light commercial heat pumps, gas and oil boilers, and multi-zone heating systems.
Hydraulic separation removes the need to manually balance pump flow rates between the primary and secondary circuits, allowing each pump to operate independently without interference. The unit also incorporates desludging and automatic air venting functions, and its built-in neodymium magnetic SMART separator captures ferromagnetic debris circulating in the system water, protecting the heat source heat exchanger from fouling.

Good to Know: Built-In Magnetic Filtration
This model includes the patented neodymium SMART magnetic separator as standard, which continuously removes ferromagnetic sludge and debris from the circulating water without needing a separate in-line magnetic filter.
Please Note: Vertical Installation Only
The manufacturer states this header must be installed vertically, with the automatic air vent positioned in the upper section. The larger primary (boiler/heat pump) connections are marked with directional arrows and must be connected exactly as labelled: supply to the upper stub, return to the lower stub.
Independent Circuit Operation
By hydraulically decoupling the primary and secondary circuits, each pump can be sized and controlled independently, eliminating the flow-rate conflicts that cause short-cycling and reduced boiler or heat pump efficiency.
EPP Insulated Body
The SHE-OC designation denotes the insulated version of the Elterm SHE range, finished in moulded EPP foam to minimise standing heat loss from the header body when not in active use.
Return Water Temperature Protection
By maintaining a stable minimum return temperature to the heat source, the header helps protect boilers from low-temperature return water corrosion and supports more consistent heat pump flow temperatures.
Automatic Air Venting & Desludging
An integrated automatic air vent continuously purges trapped air, while a drain valve at the base allows the system to be flushed of sediment during commissioning and annual maintenance.
Wall-Mounting Bracket Included
Units in this power range are supplied with a mounting bracket as standard, simplifying installation against a plant room wall without additional structural support.
Compatible With Elterm Distribution Manifolds
The 125mm connection spacing on this header is compatible with Elterm's RGP 2D+ and 3D+ pumped distribution manifolds, allowing the system to be expanded into multiple heating zones from a single low loss header.

Does the SHE-OC 40 need to be installed vertically?
Yes. Elterm's installation manual specifies the header must be mounted vertically, with the automatic air vent at the top. The primary (heat source) connections are the larger upper stubs and must be piped exactly to the arrows marked on the casing.
Is this the insulated or non-insulated version?
This is the insulated (SHE-OC) version, finished with moulded EPP foam to reduce standing heat loss. Elterm also produce a non-insulated 'SHE' equivalent at the same power rating for installations where the header will be boxed in or is not required to retain heat.
What is the built-in magnet for?
The neodymium SMART magnetic separator is built into the header body and continuously attracts ferromagnetic particles (rust and sludge) circulating in the system water, reducing the fouling load reaching the boiler or heat pump heat exchanger.
Can this header be used with a heat pump?
Yes. Low loss headers in this range are commonly specified alongside domestic and light commercial heat pumps to hydraulically separate the heat pump's fixed minimum flow circuit from the secondary heating circuit(s), which is often a stated requirement in heat pump installation manuals.
Does the 40kW rating change with flow temperature?
The 40kW figure is based on a 15K temperature differential (ΔT=15K) across the header. At a 20K differential the same unit is rated to 55kW, reflecting the higher heat carried per litre of flow at a wider temperature split.
Is a mounting bracket included?
Yes, Elterm supplies units up to and including the 100kW size in this range with a wall-mounting bracket as standard.
