The Eastron SDM630-Modbus V2 (product code: IC-METER) is a DIN-rail mounted smart energy meter supporting single-phase 2-wire, three-phase 3-wire, and three-phase 4-wire electrical systems. It is the designated companion meter for Iconica grid-tie hybrid inverters, enabling the self-consumption (export limitation) function that controls power generation and battery charging based on live grid import/export readings. Communication uses the RS-485 Modbus RTU protocol — the meter connects to the inverter via the IC-MODBUS RS-485 card (sold separately) which plugs into the inverter's intelligent slot. The SDM630-Modbus V2 measures and displays voltage, current, frequency, power, power factor, THD%, and imported/exported active and reactive energy in kWh and kVArh, with bi-directional metering supporting net-count calculation (Total = Import − Export). The built-in direct-connection current path accepts up to 80A — no external current transformers required — making the installation cost-effective and straightforward.
The product listing from Photonic Universe describes this meter as a "100A direct connection" unit. However, the official Eastron SDM630-Modbus V2 user manual (V1.6B) states a maximum direct connection of 80A. The 80A figure from the manufacturer's own technical document should be treated as authoritative. Photonic Universe's 100A claim may reflect an earlier variant or a data entry error. Verify with your supplier if your application exceeds 80A.
This meter alone does not integrate the Iconica inverter's self-consumption function. The IC-MODBUS RS-485 Modbus card must be purchased and installed into the Iconica inverter's intelligent slot to establish the RS-485 link between meter and inverter. Both products are needed to enable self-consumption and battery charging control.
This device connects directly into the mains supply (up to 500V AC phase-to-phase). Installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician in compliance with BS 7671 (18th Edition) and applicable Building Regulations. Load wiring terminal accepts 4–25mm² stranded wire; communication/pulse terminals accept 0.5–1.5mm².
The SDM630-Modbus V2 sits at the grid connection point and continuously measures import and export power. The Iconica inverter polls this data over the RS-485 Modbus link and modulates solar output and battery charge/discharge to minimise grid export and maximise self-consumption. Suitable for single-inverter and three-inverter parallel configurations when paired with the IC-MODBUS card (see the IC-MODBUS FAQ for multi-inverter addressing).
Direct current measurement up to 80A via built-in current sensing — eliminates the cost and complexity of fitting external current transformers. Load wiring terminals accept conductors from 4mm² to 25mm².
Independently accumulates imported and exported active and reactive energy. Net-count total (Import − Export) is also available. Maximum demand current and power are logged and resettable over configurable integration periods of up to 60 minutes.
Fully configurable from the front panel: address (001–247), baud rate (2.4k–38.4k), parity (even/odd/none), and stop bits (1 or 2). Default settings for Iconica pairing: address 001, 19200 bps, no parity, 1 stop bit. Password-protected setup (default 1000).
Pulse output 1 is fully configurable — assignable to total/import/export kWh or kVArh, with pulse constant from 2.5Wh to 100kWh per pulse and width 60/100/200ms. Pulse output 2 is fixed at 400 imp/kWh for import active energy (S0 compatible). Both can operate simultaneously.
Measures voltage and current total harmonic distortion (THD%) per phase — useful for diagnosing power quality issues on shared supplies. Maximum power and current demand are logged over configurable intervals (0, 5, 8, 10, 15, 20, 30, 60 minutes).
Standard DIN rail form factor (72 × 100 × 66mm) fits into any compatible consumer unit or distribution board. Lightweight at 0.32kg. Highly visible LCD with selectable backlight duration (always on, 5, 10, 30, 60, or 120 minutes).
