Behind every well-performing solar PV system on a British roof, there is an inverter doing the quiet work of turning DC from the panels into mains-grade AC for the home. It is the most active component in the system — and the one most likely to determine whether your installation actually delivers the yield it was specified to. Choose the right inverter and the system tends to be invisible: it earns its keep, monitors itself, and signals when something needs attention. Choose the wrong one and you will discover, often after the fact, that uptime, shade handling, and after-sales support are not optional.

This is the conversation that brings most UK installers and homeowners back to one name: SMA. The German inverter specialist has been in the room since the very early days of grid-tied PV, and its Sunny Boy single-phase string inverters with Smart Connected remain, by almost any measure, the reference product for residential rooftop solar. Below, we look at why — and at the four models in the Sunny Boy range that suit nearly every UK home.

"We believe you shouldn't put more components on the roof than are absolutely necessary, which is why SMA's ShadeFix takes optimisers or microinverters off the roof and places them in the inverter." — SMA, on the design philosophy behind the Sunny Boy

The brand: 45 years of building inverters, almost nothing else

SMA Solar Technology AG — Niestetal, Germany

SMA was founded in 1981 in Kassel by Werner Kleinkauf, Günther Cramer, Peter Drews, and Reiner Wettlaufer — scientists who believed electricity should be generated in a decentralised, renewable, and independent way at a time when that idea was still considered theoretical. Forty-five years later, that conviction has become the global power model, and SMA is one of the few inverter brands that has been there from the first commercial grid-tied PV system to the modern smart home.

Crucially, SMA has stayed focused. The company doesn't make panels, batteries, or EV chargers as side products around an inverter range — inverters and power electronics are the business, complemented by the energy management and monitoring software that surrounds them. That singular focus shows up in product behaviour: long service lives, conservative thermal design, mature firmware, and a global service operation that few competitors can match.

Why the Sunny Boy with Smart Connected is different

The current Sunny Boy 3.0 to 6.0 series (model suffix AV-41) is the direct successor to the Sunny Boy 3000–6000TL, which was — and is — the most widely installed residential string inverter on the planet. The AV-41 generation keeps the parts that made the predecessor a workhorse and rewrites the parts that needed rewriting: weight, commissioning, shade handling, and crucially, after-sales service.

2x

Dual MPPT Inputs

Two independent maximum power point trackers — one for each of two strings. Lets you run east/west, dormer, or split-orientation arrays without sacrificing yield from either side.

SMA ShadeFix

SMA's integrated shade-management software scans for partial shading at module level and re-points the MPP tracker every couple of seconds. No extra hardware on the roof — fewer points of failure.

Smart Connected Service

Free, automated cloud monitoring via SMA Sunny Portal. If the inverter develops a fault, SMA contacts the installer proactively and ships a replacement, typically within 1–3 days.

Transformerless Design

No internal isolation transformer means a lighter unit (17.5 kg vs ~25 kg for the previous generation) and higher peak efficiency — up to 97 % for single-phase, 98.1 % for the three-phase Tripower.

WLAN + Ethernet Web Server

Commission the inverter from a phone, tablet, or laptop in the loft — no proprietary cable kit, no dongle. The integrated web server is the user interface.

+

Battery-Ready Anytime

AC-coupled storage can be retrofitted later with a Sunny Boy Storage inverter and SMA Energy Meter. No need to over-spec the system at install time.

Smart Connected: the inverter that calls for help before you do

Most inverter brands offer monitoring. SMA's Smart Connected is something different — it is a proactive service contract included with the hardware at no extra cost. From the moment your installer registers the inverter in Sunny Portal, SMA's systems begin watching for irregularities; if one is detected, your installer (and you) are notified, and a replacement unit is dispatched before downtime accumulates.

Step 1

Auto-monitoring

Inverter streams telemetry to Sunny Portal over WLAN or Ethernet 24/7.

Step 2

Fault detected

SMA analyses the data centrally and identifies any irregularity at component level.

Step 3

Proactive notification

Installer and system owner are alerted automatically — no support call required.

Step 4

Fast replacement

If swap is needed, SMA ships a unit within 1–3 working days of diagnosis.

Picking the right Sunny Boy for your array

UK residential PV systems typically fall into one of two camps: G98-compliant single-phase systems up to 3.68 kW export limit (the majority of UK homes), and G99 systems above that limit. SMA's Sunny Boy range steps neatly across both, with four single-phase models covering everything from a small terrace install to a maximum-sized residential array.

3.0

Small to mid arrays (3.0–4.5 kWp)

Sunny Boy 3.0 — pairs with around 8–10 panels. Ideal for terraces, smaller semis, and east/west splits where you want generous DC headroom on a modest budget.

3.6

G98 maximum (3.68 kW export)

Sunny Boy 3.6 — the sweet spot for UK homes wanting a single-phase install without DNO permission delays. Fits an export-limited 4-kWp array perfectly.

5.0

Mid to large arrays (5–6.5 kWp)

Sunny Boy 5.0 — well-suited to larger semis and detached homes where DNO has granted G99 approval. Same enclosure as the 3.0/3.6 — same install effort.

6.0

Large residential / split-roof (up to 9 kWp)

Sunny Boy 6.0 — the top of the single-phase Sunny Boy range. Best for big roofs, two-aspect arrays, and homes upgrading from an older PV system.

Frequently asked questions

What does "Smart Connected" actually include — is there a subscription fee?

No subscription. Smart Connected is bundled with every Sunny Boy AV-41 inverter at no extra cost. Once your installer activates the service in Sunny Portal at commissioning, SMA monitors the inverter automatically, notifies you and your installer proactively if irregularities arise, and ships a replacement device within 1–3 working days if one is required. There is no separate monitoring contract to renew.

Do I need a separate monitoring dongle or data logger?

No. WLAN and Ethernet are built into the inverter, and so is a Webconnect-capable web server that talks directly to SMA's Sunny Portal. For typical residential systems with up to four inverters per portal account, no additional communication hardware is needed.

Will the Sunny Boy handle a partially shaded roof?

Yes — this is what SMA ShadeFix is for. Rather than putting an optimiser or microinverter on each panel, SMA's algorithm scans the MPP voltage range every couple of seconds and re-points the tracker to recover the maximum power point even under shade. For complex shading patterns you can additionally fit Tigo TS4-R module optimisers to specific affected panels; the Sunny Boy handles the communication and monitoring for those modules natively.

Can I add a battery later, or do I need to decide now?

Add later. The Sunny Boy is AC-coupled storage-ready: you can install just the PV side now and, when the time comes, add a Sunny Boy Storage battery inverter and an SMA Energy Meter. No wiring changes to the existing Sunny Boy are required, and Sunny Portal will automatically pick up the new battery once it's commissioned.

Single-phase Sunny Boy or three-phase Sunny Tripower?

If your house has a single-phase supply (the case for the vast majority of UK homes), Sunny Boy is the correct choice. If your DNO has installed a three-phase service — common on newer detached homes, larger properties, and any home with a 7.4 kW+ EV charger on a dedicated phase — the Sunny Tripower delivers the same SMA ecosystem with balanced three-phase output and slightly higher (up to 98.1%) peak efficiency.

Is the standard 5-year warranty enough?

The five-year SMA warranty is the minimum. Most UK installers offer to extend Sunny Boy warranty cover to 10, 15, or 20 years through SMA's Active Warranty Extension programme. Given the inverter is typically the only active component to be replaced over a 25-year panel warranty period, extending to 10–15 years is a sensible call on most installs.

Is the Sunny Boy compatible with Tigo optimisers?

Yes. SMA holds the worldwide rights to Tigo's TS4-R retrofit module technology and the Sunny Boy is the reference platform for it. You can equip individual panels with TS4-R units (rapid shutdown, optimisation, or monitoring variants) and the inverter handles all communication natively — no separate gateway required.

What does the installation actually involve?

At 17.5 kg, the inverter is a one-person lift. The mounting bracket goes on a solid wall (internal or external — IP65 enclosure permits outdoor mounting). DC strings land via Sunclix plug-and-play connectors, AC goes to a dedicated PV consumer-unit way, and earth bonds in place. Commissioning is done from a phone or tablet via the inverter's built-in WLAN access point — there's no PC software to install.

Looking at something larger or three-phase?

SMA's wider inverter portfolio covers everything from three-phase residential to megawatt-scale commercial. A few popular complements to the single-phase Sunny Boy range:
