The Victron SmartSolar MPPT RS 450/200-MC4 is a high-power, 48V solar charge controller built for large, series-connected PV arrays feeding a single battery bank. With a 450V DC maximum PV input and a 200A rated charge current, it delivers up to 11.5kW of charging power, making it suited to substantial off-grid and grid-connected battery systems where a single controller needs to handle a large solar array.
The unit features four independent MPPT tracking inputs, letting the array be split across multiple strings with different orientations or shading conditions while each is tracked for maximum yield. Full galvanic isolation between the PV and battery connections adds a further layer of system safety, while fan-assisted active cooling keeps the unit running at full output even in warm plant rooms. The MPPT operating voltage range is limited by the battery's float voltage — PV open-circuit voltage (VOC) should not exceed 8× the configured float voltage. For example, a 55.2V float setting caps maximum recommended PV VOC at around 441.6V. Always check array VOC against battery settings before final string sizing.

Important Safety Information
This controller must be installed by a competent, qualified installer in line with local electrical safety regulations. Given the 450V DC PV input, genuine MC4 connectors must be used on all PV wiring — substandard or counterfeit connectors are a recognised fire and arc-fault risk at this voltage.
What's the difference between the 450/100 and 450/200 models?
Both share the same 450V PV input and 48V battery voltage, but the 450/200 delivers up to 200A and 11.5kW of charging power with 4 MPPT trackers, compared to the 450/100's 100A, 5.8kW output and 2 MPPT trackers. The 450/200 also weighs more (13.7kg vs 7.9kg) and has a larger enclosure.
Can I connect multiple controllers together?
Yes. The VE.Can port supports up to 25 units daisy-chained together, allowing multiple controllers on the same battery bank to synchronise their charge stages.
Do I need a display screen to monitor this controller?
No separate display is required for full monitoring — the unit connects via Bluetooth to the VictronConnect app on a smartphone, tablet or computer for setup, live monitoring and 30-day history.
What's the maximum PV array size I can connect?
Each of the 4 MPPT trackers supports up to 7,200Wp (based on 450V x 20A), giving a theoretical total array size of up to roughly 28,800Wp across all four trackers, though actual sizing should always be checked against the 8× float voltage VOC rule.
Is this controller compatible with lithium batteries?
Yes. The charge algorithm is fully programmable with adjustable voltage settings, supporting lithium as well as lead-acid and other common battery chemistries.
