The Taurus Wet Room Floor Kit 10mm Pack of 4 is a complete, professional-grade tile backer board kit for waterproofing wet room and bathroom floors prior to tiling. Each kit contains four 1200×600×10mm XPS-cored insulation boards with a reinforced fibreglass mesh and cementitious surface — ready to tile directly onto — plus all the fixings, waterproof joint tape, and adhesive sealant needed to complete a fully bonded, watertight floor substrate. Why Use a Tile Backer Board Floor Kit?
Standard timber subfloors and concrete screeds are not suitable substrates for direct tiling in wet rooms without additional waterproofing. Timber absorbs moisture and can swell, warp, and rot over time; concrete screeds, even when dry, can harbour movement that cracks grout lines and breaks adhesive bonds. Tile backer boards solve both problems simultaneously: the XPS foam core provides thermal insulation and decouples the tile surface from minor structural movement, while the fibreglass-reinforced cementitious faces provide a dimensionally stable, chemically compatible bonding surface for tile adhesive.
In a wet room — where water is not contained to a shower enclosure but flows across the full floor — the waterproofing requirement is absolute. A Taurus floor kit gives installers a single-box solution: boards, fixings, waterproof tape for joints, and adhesive sealant. Installation Overview
These boards are designed for installation over timber joist floors and concrete substrates. The general installation sequence is as follows. Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, level, and rigid — any deflection or movement in the subfloor must be addressed before installation. Lay boards in a brick-bond (staggered joint) pattern, leaving a 2–3mm expansion gap at walls and between boards. Fix mechanically using the included screws and washers at approximately 300mm centres, positioned at least 15mm from board edges and 50mm from corners. Apply the included joint reinforcing tape over all board-to-board joints and into all internal corners, bedding into the Pro-Seal adhesive. Allow to cure before tiling. Tile using a C2-rated flexible cementitious adhesive. For full installation guidance, refer to the Taurus installation instructions included in the kit.
🔲 Fixing to Timber Joist Floors
On suspended timber floors, boards should be laid perpendicular to joists and mechanically fixed through the decking into the joists at 300mm centres. The 10mm board thickness means a total build-up of approximately 10mm (board) + tile adhesive (approx. 3–6mm) + tile thickness above the existing subfloor. Where the wet room floor needs to be level with an adjacent tiled floor, the thickness of the existing floor finish being removed should be taken into account.
🏗️ Fixing to Concrete Floors
On solid concrete floors, boards can be fully bonded using the included Fix-MD adhesive applied with a notched trowel, or mechanically fixed using suitable concrete fixings (not included). Board edges and joints must be taped with the included waterproof tape. For wet rooms on concrete, ensure the concrete slab itself has adequate damp-proof measures in place before laying boards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 10mm the right thickness for a wet room floor?
Yes — 10mm is the standard backer board thickness for floor applications. It provides a low build-up height while offering adequate rigidity and insulation for typical domestic wet room floors. Can these boards be used on both timber and concrete floors?
Yes. The boards can be mechanically fixed to timber joist subfloors using the included screws and washers, or fully bonded to concrete using the included Fix-MD adhesive. For timber floors with significant flex or deflection, additional strutting or noggins between joists may be required to ensure the subfloor is adequately rigid before boarding.
Do I need additional tanking on top of the boards?
The boards themselves are waterproof, and the included waterproof tape and Pro-Seal adhesive provide a waterproof seal at all joints and perimeter edges when correctly applied. In high-risk wet room applications where the entire floor is continuously wet, applying an additional tanking membrane over the boards before tiling provides an additional layer of protection and is good practice in accordance with BS 5385.
How many packs do I need?
Each pack covers 2.88m². Measure your floor area (length × width in metres) and divide by 2.88 to get the number of packs required. Add approximately 10–15% for cutting waste, particularly if the room has an irregular shape or multiple penetrations. For example, a 1200×900mm shower floor area (1.08m²) requires one pack; a full 1800×1200mm wet room floor (2.16m²) also requires one pack with boards to spare for waste.
What tile adhesive should be used over these boards?
Use a C2-rated flexible cementitious tile adhesive for all applications over tile backer boards. In wet rooms, a C2TE or S1 classified adhesive is recommended for its improved adhesion and flexibility. Do not use ready-mixed or acrylic-based adhesives in continuously wet areas. Tile adhesive is not included in this kit.
Can these boards be used with underfloor heating?
Yes. The XPS core has good thermal properties and the boards are compatible with electric underfloor heating mats. Lay the UFH mat in the tile adhesive layer over the boards. The thermal insulation of the board also helps direct heat upward into the tile layer rather than downward into the subfloor, improving heating efficiency.
⚠️ Important Notes: These boards are intended for professional or competent DIY installation — ensure the subfloor is clean, level, dry, and structurally sound before fitting. Always stagger board joints (brick-bond pattern) and ensure board edges are fully supported. Fix at a minimum of 300mm centres, 15mm from board edges and 50mm from corners. All joints, perimeter edges, and internal corners must be taped and sealed with the included tape and adhesive before tiling.
