How It Works — The Science Behind Aquabion
Hard water contains calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) dissolved in its ionic form. When this water is heated or loses pressure, the calcium precipitates out and bonds to surfaces as limescale — the rock-hard deposit that coats boiler elements, pipe walls, tap internals, and shower screens.
Aquabion works by introducing a controlled galvanic reaction directly within the water flow. The unit's zinc sacrificial anodes release a small, precisely calibrated quantity of zinc ions (Zn²⁺) into the passing water. These zinc ions react with the calcium ions already present, triggering a crystalline phase change: the calcium shifts from its adherent calcite form to a non-adherent aragonite form. Aragonite has the same chemical composition as calcite (it is still calcium carbonate) but a different crystal structure — one that cannot bond to pipe walls, boiler elements, or other surfaces. It passes harmlessly through the system and is flushed away with normal water flow.
🔄 What happens to existing limescale?
Aquabion also has a gradual curative effect on existing limescale deposits. As treated water flows past old limescale, the aragonite crystals slowly erode the deposit from its surface. Which Aquabion Do I Need — S15 or S20?
Correct sizing is critical to Aquabion performance. Oversizing does not improve results — it reduces them, because the water passes through the unit too quickly for optimal zinc ion contact. Aquabion sizing is based on actual peak flow demand, not pipe size alone.

Where to Install
The Aquabion S15 should be installed as close to the incoming stop tap as possible — ideally immediately after it — so that the entire household water supply is treated before it reaches any appliance, tap, or heating circuit. Installing downstream of any branch points means those branches will receive untreated water.
The unit installs inline using standard 15mm compression fittings (not included — use standard plumbing fittings appropriate for the pipework type). It can be installed in any orientation — horizontal, vertical, or at an angle — as long as water flows in the direction of the arrow marked on the body. The included earthing cable and straps must be connected as shown in the installation instructions to ensure correct galvanic operation and to comply with electrical equipotential bonding requirements.

Will I still see limescale after installing the Aquabion?
Yes — you will still see deposits in your kettle, on shower screens, and around taps. The difference is that the deposit is now soft aragonite rather than hard calcite. It wipes away easily with a cloth without scrubbing or chemical cleaners. Over time you should notice it becomes progressively easier to clean, as the system also slowly breaks down existing hard deposits.
Is the S15 the right size for my home?
The S15 is correct for homes with a 15mm incoming mains supply and where you typically use one shower at a time (or occasionally two). If you have a 22mm mains or regularly use two or more showers simultaneously, you need the S20. Never oversize — it reduces effectiveness. If unsure, contact Aquabion UK with your stop tap size and usage details before ordering.
Does it work with a combi boiler?
Yes — the Aquabion S15 is compatible with combi boilers, system boilers, heat-only boilers, and unvented cylinders. Install it on the incoming cold water mains supply immediately after the stop tap and it will protect your entire heating and hot water system.
Can I use it with a water tank (indirect system)?
Yes — install on the incoming mains feed. The treated water fills your cold water tank and is then drawn through your system as normal. The aragonite conversion remains effective in stored water.
Is it safe to drink the treated water?
Yes. Aquabion is WRAS approved for use on drinking water supplies. The tiny amount of zinc introduced is well within safe drinking water limits — far below the WHO guideline of 3 mg/l for zinc in drinking water. No sodium is added. It is safe for babies, pregnant women, and those on low-sodium diets.
Can I use Aquabion-treated water in a fish pond?
No — the trace zinc levels that are safe for human consumption can be harmful to fish, particularly sensitive species such as Koi, trout, salmon, and goldfish. Do not fill fish ponds or aquariums with Aquabion-treated water.
How hard does my water need to be for the Aquabion to be effective?
The Aquabion works at all standard UK water hardness levels. Performance is optimal up to approximately 400 ppm (parts per million) of calcium carbonate — which covers virtually all UK hard water areas. Above 400 ppm (found in less than 1% of UK areas), performance may be reduced and Aquabion UK should be consulted first.
What happens after 7 years?
The zinc anodes are gradually consumed during normal operation. After 7 years the anodes are depleted and the unit should be replaced. Aquabion operates an end-of-life return programme — the old unit is sent for reconditioning and a discount is typically offered on the replacement. The unit does not fail catastrophically — it simply becomes less effective as the anodes exhaust.
Does it protect steam appliances or steam ovens?
No — Aquabion provides reduced effectiveness for applications above 80°C where water is converted to steam, such as steam ovens and commercial steam dishwashers. At these temperatures some of the beneficial aragonite conversion is reversed. For these applications, Aquabion estimates approximately 50% effectiveness — scaling frequency is reduced but not eliminated.
