The Enphase IQ9N has landed in the UK
On 5 June 2026, Enphase began shipping its ninth-generation microinverter — the IQ9N — through UK distribution partners. It's the first time the company has used gallium nitride (GaN) switching devices in a residential microinverter, and the spec sheet is a meaningful jump on the IQ8 series: 427 VA of continuous AC output, 16 A of continuous DC input, and a 97.44% European weighted efficiency rating that Enphase positions as the highest in its residential portfolio.
For UK solar installers and the more confident DIY end of the market, this matters for two reasons. First, modern residential PV modules are heading toward 500–600 W and existing microinverters were starting to clip on the upper end. Second, GaN brings cooler operation and faster switching, which should translate to longer field life — and Enphase backs the IQ9N with its 25-year limited warranty, the same horizon as the panels you'll typically pair it with.
This guide covers what's new in the IQ9N, how microinverter architecture compares with traditional string inverters, the full Enphase residential lineup we stock (from the budget-friendly IQ7+ through the IQ8 family to the new IQ9N), how the IQ Battery 5P fits into the picture, the accessories and Q-cable parts you'll need for a clean installation, and a high-level look at what installation involves. We finish with a forward-look at the UK balcony solar legislation and what an Enphase plug-in kit could mean once the framework lands.
The full product launch reel — including the GaN heat-dissipation animation — sits on the Enphase homeowner page. Worth a few minutes if you spec these for clients.
What's new in the IQ9N
Enphase has effectively been chasing two things across the IQ8 family: more headroom for high-wattage panels, and lower heat in the casing. The IQ9N is the cleanest expression of both goals so far, because GaN switching changes the underlying power-electronics maths in a way that silicon never could.
Gallium nitride switching
GaN bi-directional switch (BDS) devices replace traditional silicon MOSFETs. The wider band gap means faster switching with lower conduction losses — translating directly into less waste heat and a higher peak efficiency (up to 97.95%).
Cooler operation, longer life
Lower internal temperatures are the single biggest reliability lever in any power-electronics product. Cooler GaN architecture is the basis on which Enphase backs the IQ9N with a 25-year limited warranty — matched to typical panel lifespans.
Built for big panels
16 A of continuous DC current and 427 VA of continuous AC output pair cleanly with the latest 500–600 W residential modules, without throttling output during peak generation hours in the summer.
Backward compatible
The IQ9N runs on the same IQ Cable, IQ Gateway, IQ Combiner and IQ Battery 5P infrastructure as IQ7 and IQ8 — so existing arrays can be extended or partially upgraded without scrapping accessories.
Built for the long haul
Over one million cumulative hours of lifecycle testing across the IQ Series. 25-year limited warranty.
IP67 in every climate
Double-insulated corrosion-resistant polymer housing rated for -40°C to +65°C — sun, snow and rain.
An all-AC roof — no high-voltage DC string
Every Enphase microinverter — IQ9N included — converts DC to AC at the panel itself. The roof never carries the 600 V-plus DC string that a traditional centralised inverter system requires, which fundamentally changes the failure modes available to the system.
Rapid Shutdown Built In
When the grid drops or the AC isolator is opened, every microinverter de-energises automatically. Each panel sits at ~40–80 V DC — well below the threshold needed to sustain a propagating arc fault.
Sealed Polymer Casing
IP67-rated, Class II double-insulated, corrosion-resistant polymer housing. Engineered to operate -40°C to +65°C for full UK climate range, including coastal salt-air installations.
One Panel Down, Array Up
A single shaded, soiled or failed module doesn't drag the rest of the string down with it. Each microinverter MPPTs its own panel independently — measurable gains on complex roofs.
Microinverters vs string inverters
If you've installed or owned solar in the UK over the last decade, you'll know the default architecture is a string inverter: 8 to 16 panels wired in series at high DC voltage, fed into a single central inverter mounted in the garage or loft. It works, it's well-understood, and it's competitive on £/kWp at install — but it has well-known limitations under partial shade, complex roofs, and over the long replacement cycle.
Microinverter architecture inverts the trade-off: every panel gets its own micro-scale inverter on the back of the module, and the roof carries only AC. The diagram below from Enphase is the clearest visualisation of the practical difference — note the single point of failure on the right.
Microinverter architecture (left): if one panel or microinverter fails, the rest of the array keeps producing. String inverter (right): a single failure at the central inverter takes the whole array offline.
Side-by-side comparison
| Attribute | IQ Microinverters | String Inverter |
|---|---|---|
| Roof DC voltage | ~40–80 V per panel | Up to 600 V+ across string |
| MPPT granularity | Per panel | Whole string (or 2 per inverter) |
| Partial shade tolerance | ✓ Affected panel only | ✗ Entire string clipped |
| Single point of failure | ✓ No — distributed | ✗ Yes — central inverter |
| Rapid shutdown | Native (built-in) | Requires module-level add-on |
| Panel-level monitoring | ✓ Standard via IQ Gateway | ✗ String-level only |
| Inverter warranty | 25 years | Typically 5–12 years |
| Mid-life replacement | Designed to match panel lifespan | Usually 1–2 inverter swaps over 25 yr |
| Best for complex roofs | ✓ Mixed orientations, shading | Best for clean south-facing strings |
| £/kWp install cost | Higher upfront on hardware | Lower upfront on hardware |
For a south-facing roof with one tidy string and no shade, a quality string inverter remains a defensible choice — there's a reason it dominates UK installs. But the moment you have multiple orientations, dormers, chimneys, neighbouring tree lines, or any thought of expanding the system later, the microinverter case becomes very strong on lifetime yield, monitoring depth, and serviceability.
Enphase microinverter buying guide
The Enphase residential portfolio breaks into three generations. The IQ7+ is the legacy 60/72-cell unit — still in production, still useful for budget retrofits and warranty-matched additions to existing IQ7 arrays. The IQ8 series is the current mainstream choice, with several variants tuned for different panel cell counts and grid topologies. The new IQ9N sits at the top of the range for high-wattage modern modules.

Combining IQ microinverters with the IQ Battery 5P
The full Enphase Energy System pairs microinverters with the IQ Battery 5P, an all-in-one AC-coupled storage unit. Crucially, the IQ Battery 5P has six embedded grid-forming IQ8D-BAT microinverters of its own — which is why it integrates so cleanly with an Enphase array and why the same IQ Gateway monitors both PV and storage as a single system.
Three things make this combination work well in UK homes. First, the battery uses LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistry — the chemistry preferred by fire authorities for indoor installation due to its thermal stability. Second, it's modular: a single 5 kWh unit covers small homes, and you can stack multiple units up to 60 kWh for higher consumption households. Third, when paired with the IQ System Controller 3, the array continues producing during a grid outage — a feature most string-inverter systems don't offer without significant added hardware.
3.84 kW continuous / 7.68 kW peak
Per IQ Battery 5P unit. Enough headroom to run heat pumps and EV chargers during the day from stored solar, not just at peak demand.
Modular to 60 kWh

Accessories, cables & monitoring
An Enphase install isn't just microinverters and panels. The system runs on a small handful of supporting components — the IQ Cable (or Q Cable) that daisy-chains everything together, the IQ Gateway that talks to the cloud, the IQ System Controller that handles backup, and a few small parts that finish off the AC branch correctly. Skipping or substituting any of these creates warranty and commissioning headaches downstream.

Installation overview
An Enphase install is fundamentally different from a string-inverter install: the bulk of the wiring work happens on the roof rather than in a central enclosure. The good news is that the rooftop work is repetitive, well-defined and largely tool-free thanks to MC4 connectors and the IQ Cable plug system. The below is a high-level sequence for an MCS-registered installer — always work to the latest Enphase installation manual and to UK BS 7671 and G98/G99 compliance.
Pre-install: compatibility & sizing
Run the chosen module through the Enphase module compatibility calculator to confirm the right microinverter (IQ9N for high-wattage, IQ8MC for mainstream 60/72-cell, etc.). Confirm DNO notification route (G98 single-phase ≤3.68 kW, G99 above) and SEG strategy.
Mount the IQ Cable trunk on the rails
Lay the IQ Cable along the racking before the panels go up. Each connector on the trunk maps to a panel position. Always leave one extra drop per row for service access.
Bracket microinverters under panels
Mount each microinverter to the racking bracket-side up — never upside down. Class II IP67 housing means no enclosure required, but keep direct sun off the connectors during install and respect minimum bend radii on cabling.
Connect MC4 and IQ Cable drops
DC side: panel MC4 male/female into the microinverter integrated MC4 connectors. AC side: snap the microinverter pigtail into the corresponding IQ Cable drop. Cap any unused branch connector with a Q-Cable AC Branch Terminator — never leave open.
AC isolation, Gateway & commissioning
Wire the branch through a dedicated AC isolator into the consumer unit (or via an IQ Combiner). Install the IQ Gateway, connect to WiFi/Ethernet, and commission via the Enphase Installer Toolkit app — the Gateway discovers each microinverter by serial number and validates phase distribution.
Add IQ Battery 5P + System Controller (if specified)
If storage and backup are part of the brief, mount the IQ Battery 5P, run the Communications Kit 2 USB-C link to the Gateway, and install the IQ System Controller 3 to manage the grid/backup transition. Commissioning happens through the same Installer Toolkit flow.
Total roof time on a typical 6–10 kWp residential install is shorter than installers expect first time round — the absence of high-voltage DC string testing alone removes a meaningful chunk of commissioning effort. Where time is added, it's on the per-panel pre-mount of microinverters and the Gateway commissioning step.
Frequently asked questions
Is the IQ9N backward compatible with my existing IQ7 or IQ8 array?
Yes. The IQ9N runs on the same IQ Cable trunk, the same IQ Gateway, the same IQ Combiner, and works alongside IQ7 and IQ8 series microinverters on a mixed array. You can extend an existing system with IQ9N units on higher-wattage modules without scrapping accessories — practical for staged upgrades and array extensions.
What's the practical difference between GaN and silicon switching?
Gallium nitride has a wider band gap than silicon, which means GaN transistors can switch faster and tolerate higher voltages with lower conduction losses. In a microinverter, that translates to less waste heat generated during normal operation. Less heat means longer component life and higher peak efficiency — Enphase quotes 97.95% peak and 97.44% EU weighted for the IQ9N, against ~96.7–97% for the comparable IQ8 units.
Do I need an IQ Gateway if I just want grid-tied solar without monitoring?
Yes. The IQ Gateway is required for commissioning, firmware updates, grid compliance reporting, and warranty validation — even if a homeowner never opens the Enphase App. Enphase's installer guidance treats the Gateway as a mandatory part of the system, not an optional monitoring add-on. The Gateway is included in an IQ Combiner if you specify one.
Can I install Enphase microinverters as a DIY project in the UK?
A grid-tied PV install in the UK requires a competent person registered under one of the recognised schemes (e.g. MCS for SEG eligibility, NICEIC/NAPIT for Part P) and either a G98 or G99 DNO notification depending on system size. The Enphase hardware is well-suited to capable DIY builders for off-grid or pre-grid mock-ups and for understanding the architecture, but the live grid connection has to be made by a qualified electrician — both for legal compliance and for insurance.
Does the IQ Battery 5P provide backup during a grid outage?
Only when paired with an IQ System Controller (3 or 3G). The battery alone is grid-tied storage; the System Controller is the Microgrid Interconnection Device that physically isolates the home from the grid during an outage and allows the array and battery to keep producing. Without the Controller, the battery shuts off with the grid as required by G98/G99.
What's the lifetime cost vs. a string inverter system?
Microinverters carry a higher upfront hardware cost but a longer warranty (25 years vs. typical 5–12 years for string inverters). Over a 25-year horizon, the microinverter avoids 1–2 mid-life inverter replacements — each of which can cost £800–£1,500 plus labour. Add in measurable yield gains on partially-shaded or multi-orientation roofs (often 5–15% over the array lifetime) and the total cost of ownership picture typically favours microinverters on anything that isn't a clean single-orientation roof.
When will an Enphase balcony solar kit be available in the UK?
No date has been confirmed. Plug-in solar was legalised in the UK in March 2026 with the BS 7671 Amendment 4 wiring rules update in April 2026, but the certified plug-in product standard hasn't been finalised. Until it is, no manufacturer — Enphase included — has a fully-compliant UK plug-in kit on sale. We'll update this guide as soon as Enphase confirms a UK balcony product.
