OpenTherm & Digital Protocol Compatibility — Explained
OpenTherm is an open communication standard used by many modern condensing boilers from manufacturers including Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Intergas, Remeha, Baxi, Ideal, and others. Rather than simply sending an on/off signal, OpenTherm allows a thermostat to send a specific target flow temperature request to the boiler — and the boiler responds by modulating its burner output to achieve exactly that temperature.
This modulation is important because condensing boilers are most efficient when operating at lower return temperatures (below around 55°C) — the point at which the flue gases condense and release latent heat. A standard on/off thermostat forces the boiler to fire at full output (often 60–80°C flow temperature) regardless of the actual demand, which wastes this condensing efficiency. A tado° thermostat connected via OpenTherm requests only the flow temperature actually needed — often 40–55°C on a mild day — keeping the boiler in its efficient condensing range for much longer during each cycle.

The tado° Internet Bridge — What It Does & Why It's Included
The tado° Internet Bridge is a small unit (81 × 27 × 22mm) that plugs into your router via the included Ethernet cable and connects to a UK USB power supply. It serves as the communication hub between your tado° Wired Smart Thermostat and the tado° cloud — relaying your app commands to the thermostat, and sending thermostat data (temperature readings, humidity, activity) back to the app. It communicates with the Smart Thermostat wirelessly using tado°'s proprietary 868 MHz radio frequency, giving a strong signal throughout most homes without reliance on Wi-Fi.
One Internet Bridge covers one home. If you expand your setup with additional tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats (add-ons), they also connect via the same Internet Bridge — you will never need more than one Bridge per home for V3+ devices.

Installation — DIY or Professional
tado° is designed for confident DIY installation. The tado° app walks you through the entire process step by step, with wiring diagrams specific to your boiler make and model. Most customers with an existing wired thermostat complete the replacement in under 30 minutes. The thermostat connects at the same wiring points as your old thermostat — if your existing thermostat had two terminals, the tado° uses the same two terminals. For OpenTherm, you connect the two-wire OpenTherm loop from the boiler directly to the thermostat's OT terminals.

Does my boiler need to support OpenTherm?
No — OpenTherm compatibility is a bonus, not a requirement. This kit works with any boiler that supports standard relay (on/off) switching, which covers the vast majority of UK gas and oil boilers. If your boiler does support OpenTherm, tado° will automatically detect and use it for modulating control. If it doesn't, tado° operates in relay mode with all smart features fully active. Can I control hot water with this kit?
No — this Wired Starter Kit controls heating only and is designed for homes with a combi boiler (which heats water on demand without a cylinder). If you have a system or conventional boiler with a hot water cylinder and need to control hot water, you need the tado° Wireless Smart Thermostat Starter Kit with Extension Kit (which includes a separate programmer/receiver for hot water control).
Do the smart features require a subscription?

Does the Internet Bridge need to be near the thermostat?
No — the Internet Bridge connects to your router via Ethernet (cable included) and can be placed anywhere in the home with a mains socket and router access, regardless of where the thermostat is located. It communicates with the thermostat via 868 MHz radio, which has a strong range throughout most UK homes. In very large properties, signal strength may be reduced, but this is uncommon.
Can I add room-by-room control later?
Yes — once your Starter Kit is installed, you can add tado° Smart Radiator Thermostats V3+ (sold separately, as add-ons) to individual radiators at any time. Each Smart Radiator Thermostat replaces the existing TRV and connects wirelessly to the same Internet Bridge. You can then set independent schedules and temperature targets for each room within the tado° app.
Is this kit compatible with the newer tado° X range?
The V3+ and tado° X ranges are not cross-compatible. The Internet Bridge included in the V3+ Starter Kit does not work with tado° X devices, and V3+ thermostats cannot be added to a tado° X system.
